Elaine Mokhtefi dispose d\u2019une remarquable lucidit\u00e9 et de toute sa m\u00e9moire, jusque dans les moindres d\u00e9tails. Elle vient pr\u00e9senter son livre <\/span><strong style=\"text-transform: initial;\">\u00ab\u00a0Alger, capitale de la r\u00e9volution, De Fanon aux Black Panthers\u00a0\u00bb (La Fabrique \u00e9ditions)<\/strong><span style=\"text-transform: initial;\">, r\u00e9cemment traduit de l\u2019anglais.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>N\u00e9e Elaine Klein \u00e0 New York en 1928, dans une famille juive de la classe ouvri\u00e8re, mari\u00e9e plus tard \u00e0 un cadre de l\u2019Arm\u00e9e de lib\u00e9ration nationale alg\u00e9rienne devenu \u00e9crivain, Mokhtar Mokhtefi (d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en 2015), la vie de cette militante anticolonialiste est un v\u00e9ritable roman d\u2019aventure. Apr\u00e8s ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 New York, elle d\u00e9barque \u00e0 Paris en 1951, o\u00f9 elle est effar\u00e9e par le racisme, les discriminations et les violences que subissent les Alg\u00e9riens en France. Cela ne lui rappelle que trop \u00ab\u00a0<em>ce que les Afro-Am\u00e9ricains vivaient dans le sud des Etats-Unis\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb, dit-elle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__body\">\n<h2>&#8220;Fanon \u00e9tait exemplaire&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Elle se rapproche alors des Alg\u00e9riens de France engag\u00e9s pour l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance de leur pays. Elaine Mokhtefi est aussi tr\u00e8s impliqu\u00e9e dans l\u2019Assembl\u00e9e mondiale de la jeunesse, une organisation internationaliste. A ce titre, elle voyage beaucoup pour pr\u00e9parer des rencontres \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019elle rencontre le Martiniquais Frantz Fanon, en ao\u00fbt 1960 \u00e0 Accra, au Ghana. Et l\u2019homme, alors ambassadeur du Gouvernement provisoire de la R\u00e9publique alg\u00e9rienne (GPRA) pour l\u2019Afrique, lui fait forte impression.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab\u00a0<em>Fanon \u00e9tait passionn\u00e9, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de psychiatrie, de politique ou de football<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, \u00e9crit-elle. \u00ab\u00a0<em>L\u2019impression g\u00e9n\u00e9rale qu\u2019il d\u00e9gageait \u00e9tait celle d\u2019un homme intense, tendu et press\u00e9.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Notant son ascension fulgurante dans la hi\u00e9rarchie alg\u00e9rienne, sans \u00eatre n\u00e9 dans ce pays et n\u2019\u00e9tant pas musulman, Elaine Mokhtefi explique \u00e0 La1ere.fr que \u00ab\u00a0<em>ses capacit\u00e9s d\u2019\u00e9crivain, d\u2019analyste et de psychologue ont d\u00e9termin\u00e9 son incroyable carri\u00e8re\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb. \u00ab\u00a0<em>Cela l\u2019a fait accepter comme dirigeant, et il ne faut pas oublier que c\u2019est Fanon qui a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 la politique africaine de l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, dit-elle. \u00ab<em>\u00a0Il \u00e9tait exemplaire. C\u2019\u00e9tait un r\u00e9volutionnaire 24h sur 24.<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Mourir pour son pays&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Jean-Paul Sartre, qui avait \u00e9crit la pr\u00e9face des \u00ab\u00a0Damn\u00e9s de la terre\u00a0\u00bb, livre phare du th\u00e9oricien martiniquais, \u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0fascin\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb par Fanon, ajoute Elaine Mokhtefi. Cet ouvrage, son dernier, \u00ab\u00a0<em>est devenu une lecture obligatoire, le manuel de la r\u00e9volution pour des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de militants \u00e0 travers le monde\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb, qui a inspir\u00e9 notamment la philosophie politique des Black Panthers am\u00e9ricains.<\/p>\n<p>A son retour \u00e0 New York en septembre 1960, Elaine Mokhtefi travaille pour le bureau local du GPRA et du Front de lib\u00e9ration nationale (FLN), charg\u00e9s des relations avec les Nations unies. Elle s\u2019initie aux arcanes de la vie diplomatique et fr\u00e9quente des dirigeants et futurs dirigeants de premier plan. Elle retrouve Frantz Fanon en octobre 1961, atteint de leuc\u00e9mie et tr\u00e8s affaibli, \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital de Bethesda dans le Maryland, pas tr\u00e8s loin de Washington, o\u00f9 les m\u00e9decins tentent un traitement de la derni\u00e8re chance. Ses camarades alg\u00e9riens, ses \u00ab\u00a0fr\u00e8res\u00a0\u00bb comme il disait, lui manquaient terriblement, rappelle Elaine Mokhtefi. Les soins m\u00e9dicaux \u00e9chouent.
